How Sibling Birth Order Affects Eczema Risk
Did you know that there’s a scientific theory about the connection between your sibling birth order and the likelihood of developing eczema? We chatted with Dr. Ian Myles and learned more about this intriguing connection. While it does not apply to all cases, there tends to be a common pattern in the discoveries.
This study was also published in the Clinical and Translational Allergy. They shared that being second-born or later with siblings may marginally decrease the lifetime risk of atopic dermatitis and food allergy. Furthermore, the findings suggest a potential protective effect from older siblings.
Here’s what we discovered:
- There’s a protective power from older siblings: Surprisingly, having an older sibling often serves as a protective shield against eczema. While it’s not a universal rule, it is more likely for the older sibling to have a higher risk of eczema, thereby creating a shield that prevents younger siblings from developing it.
- Think of it like a “hand-me-downs” metaphor: Picture the nursery filled with brand-new items or even renovations that have been done in time for the firstborn. New furniture and renovations often use materials like polyurethane, which can off-gas and increase exposure to diisocyanates, potentially impacting eczema. However, by the time the fourth child arrives, they usually receive hand-me-downs and items the older kids didn’t destroy. Interestingly, this relates to the sibling theory for eczema, where younger siblings have a lower risk the further they are in the birth order. Consequently, the protective effect seems to increase with each additional sibling.
- Eczema risk decreases across birth order: Statistical insights reveal that for the fourth child, the risk of eczema takes a notable plunge in industrialized societies. It’s a fascinating trend that highlights the complexity of eczema risk factors. By sibling number ten, the risk of eczema often decreases substantially.
What’s Your Birth Order Story?
We’d love to hear from you! Does your family’s birth order align with these insights, or have you observed a different pattern?
(Psst – this personally aligns for me! I am sibling number one and experienced eczema while my younger brother doesn’t have it at all.)
