In today’s video, I interviewed professional makeup artist and holistic nutritionist Carley Simandl. Carley has over 15 years of experience as a make up artist for weddings, fashion shows, and television. She’s not only a skin expert – but she is also a yoga teacher and she was also my teacher at nutrition school at one time.
I really look up to Carley, because for a long time she had been using conventional makeup products on her clients, until one day, she learned how toxic the ingredients can be.
She decided to switch to all natural make up products, even when that meant she had to spend hundreds more dollars on even just a make up palette (and cleaner make up brands) for her clients.
We filmed this video a while ago for the private online portal of my group coaching program at the Conqueror Eczema Academy, and today I want to release this video publicly to you because it is one of the most requested video topics that I get. I hope you enjoy the video!
The natural cosmetics mentioned in this video are:

Here are a few notes from the video:
Natural cosmetics have been around for about 30-40 years, but it’s not as much time in history as the conventional cosmetic companies which have been around for well over a century.
A lot of these more natural companies use vitamin E and castor oil which have anti-inflammatory properties. Natural oxides are used to preserve the product. Natural oxides like zinc oxide have good staying power (on the skin and in the packaging) and doesn’t contaminate as fast as some other natural cosmetics.
Using natural makeup is healthier for the skin because it’s very breathable, and it has built in anti-inflammatory nutrients that could potentially overtime correct a problem on the skin.
For people with dermatitis and eczema on the face, if you don’t need makeup on the whole face, then let your skin breathe without it and only use it on the areas of imbalance.
Stipple on the foundation first in the area of imbalance, then set it with a powder. The dual effect will make the molecules lock better, which will increase the wear, and it will make it more of a matte finish.
- For skin that is more dry, flaky, thin and tight, you’ll want to go for more of the cream or liquid consistency.
- For skin that is very oily, you’ll want to go with more of a powder consistency, which will give you more of a matte finish.
- In the winter, you can use a cream blush to give more moisturizer to dry skin and a protective barrier from the cold weather.
- In the summer, you can use a powder blush which will let the skin breathe more in the warmer temperatures.
Make up tips for people prone to flaky skin:
• Moisturize before you put on your make up by using an oil, such as rose hip oil on damp skin. Let that absorb for 3-5 minutes. Now your skin is prepped and set, and ready for you to build with the makeup.
• Where there are areas of excessive dryness, you’ll want to stipple the makeup on, so it won’t lift the skin cells up (like how a rubbing side to side application would do).
• Dampening the sponge before applying and stippling the makeup will help too.
• Once a week you will want to exfoliate with a good exfoliate product or mask to lift up those dead skin cells. Make sure that you are gently exfoliating the skin, not aggressively!
Make up tips for people prone to red skin:
• Since green neutralizes red, look for a good olive based foundation, or a green concealer that you can mix in with your foundation.
• It’s a simple yet effective tip that lasts longer because typically if you don’t add the green, when your natural oils start to come through, the redness will dissipate through the foundation. Adding the green will give you coverage all day.
• It’s neutralization via the pigment… the power is in the pigment. Starting with a refreshing spritz and ending with a spritz will help to set the makeup.
Use a homemade facial toner of rose water and different essential oils. If you ever have too powdery of a finish, it will help bring the skin quality back, or if your makeup looks flat it will bring up a natural dewy glow. It’s like a glass of water for the face!
I hope you enjoyed watching the video!
