I recently had the privilege of trying out these cute little adult PJ’s from The Eczema Company.
When I first got them in the mail, I was excited to receive them because, well, who doesn’t want to try adult PJ’s?!
These are special because they’re made from bamboo and organic cotton. The best part is that they are so soft and smooth. I told my husband that I was so excited about that. I wore them at night on the first day I got them.
Now you might be wondering – why am I trying on PJ’s for eczema?
I actually have a very bad habit of scratching at night, without even knowing it (even if there’s no rashes or eczema patches). Having lived with eczema for over 20+ years, I think that a lot of it is very psychological. My greatest fear when I got married was that it would wake and disturb my husband at night when I scratched. I prayed so hard before I got married that my skin would heal and that scratching wouldn’t bother my husband at night.
Thankfully, my prayer was answered. It really doesn’t bother my husband (except for extremely rare occasions)! I’m so thankful that my husband is such a heavy sleeper too.
The good thing about the PJ’s are that the pajama pants cover your feet, which can be a good and bad thing. It’s good because it can stop you from scratching, but it can also be very frustrating because if you want to scratch or have skin-to-skin contact with your feet, you have to remove the whole PJ pants just to do that (but – I guess that’s the purpose of it, so it can help you stop scratching!).
The good thing about the top part of the PJ’s (the shirt part) is that you have the option to fold the sleeves over your hands (so it’s kind of like mittens), or either you can leave the “mittens” off so that your hands are free to do what they pleased. Since the sleeves can be pulled over your hands at night when you’re sleeping, it can help you stop scratching.
So what was my experience at night when I slept with the PJ’s?
As I mentioned how itching can be very psychological (especially out of years of habit!), last winter, whenever I was trying to go to bed, there were days that I would scratch all over before I slept because it just felt so good (ugh!). I wasn’t even itchy (at least I don’t think), but it was my way of relieving stress and it felt “comforting,” sadly. Unfortunately, scratching at night also deterred me from falling asleep right away, which is why it took me a long time to sleep.
Wearing the PJ sleeves really helped me lose that drive and desire to scratch (since I really couldn’t do anything with the sleeves on). I fell asleep so quickly because I didn’t feel compelled to itch – so that was good.
The only downside for me was that at night when I wanted to itch, I wasn’t able to. This actually made me try to scratch even more at night (without knowing it). Because my body really wanted to, I would rip off the top and bottom of my PJ’s at night without knowing it! It was frustrating because I scratched even more than usual and I felt the affects of it the next morning.
My skin felt like it was scratched a lot (when it usually doesn’t). I was also so tired from it because it made me wake up a few times at night, and it woke my husband as well.
I spoke with Jennifer from The Eczema Company though, and she said she hasn’t heard of anyone else who has had this same experience, so I could just be an exception.
I also tried to sleep with the PJ’s on without the “mitten” rolled over my hands. Doing so was fine – and I didn’t have the same struggles as I did when I slept with it at night.
All in all, despite my experiences with it, the pajamas are incredibly soft and the material of it is great. They’re great for allergies or sensitive skin, and the cooling, anti-bacterial properties of bamboo are supposed to help soothe the skin as you sleep.
Having worked with eczema clients, I notice that what works for one person may not work for another, so try out different things and see what works best for your skin 🙂 I want to encourage you to keep believing and you’ll eventually find something to help it get better!
