We all know that zinc is incredibly healing for the skin….
But have you ever heard of a clothing line made with…zinc?!
We all know how healing zinc can be for the body. When you have oozing or any type of rash, zinc is often recommended.
If zinc is so healing, why not wear it on your clothing?
…Well now, you officially can!
I recently heard about a new clothing line called Remedywear, made from zinc.
Their latest products include the Remedywear Long Sleeve Shirt and Remedywear Pants.
They also have several different types of clothing made with zinc for both adults and children, including shirts, pants, socks and gloves.
Zinc has many other benefits including inhibiting bacterial growth, blocking odor, and soothing the skin. Zinc oxide powder is actually an active ingredient in calamine, which goes into anti-itch soothing calamine lotion as well as countless creams for eczema, psoriasis and other inflamed skin conditions. It can also be found in creams for diaper rash, which believe it or not is a form of dermatitis!
Smartcel™ Sensitive is used in their Remedywear garments because using zinc oxide for eczema has proven clinically effective in reducing flares, [1] since it offers many benefits for people with eczema and other sensitive skin conditions including:
- Strong antibacterial and anti-odor properties.
- Soothes redness and irritation from eczema.
- It’s very cooling and helps with itching.
- Fibers are clinically show to improve quality of sleep in people with itchy skin [1].
They use zinc in the fabric instead of other antimicrobial agents because other nanoparticles that have been added as antimicrobial finishes to textile, such as silver and chitosan, have the possibility of cross-reacting with skin, promoting resistant-strains of bacteria, and pose an ecological concern for particles that are not filtered by wastewater treatment after washes.
Unlike silver or chitosan, zinc is a naturally occurring mineral, approved for use in a number of products, from supplements to sunscreen. It does not get absorbed by the skin because it stays embedded in the fabric even after many washes – which is amazing!
I also had a chance to interview Jen at the National Eczema Expo this past June on her new clothing line, which you can watch below.
My body hurt wearing regular clothes that exposed my skin because I had a lot of cuts and open wounds, as I shared here on Instagram because of my post-birth flare up. This made it hard for me to sleep because I was hurting.
Luckily, the Remedywear came in time. I decided to try it because the clothes were tightly fit, so I knew it would hug my body so that my skin would not hurt as much.
During my flare ups, I did not like the idea of wearing tight clothing because it made me feel so uncomfortable. Luckily, this time it actually helped me reduce the pain of the open sores. It also helped me sleep better that night when I was experiencing the flare ups.
The clothing is also light weight and has a silky feel to it.
Jennifer Hall, who is an eczema coach with me on my 8 week group coaching program, has tried it and she gave this wonderful review on it.
“I typically don’t wear full on clothing when I sleep at night because I find it so restricting, so I’ll usually just sleep in a t-shirt and undies as this makes me most comfortable. I do have a habit of scratching certain areas like my lower arms and lower legs and feet at night, and it has become this habit type comforting scratch cycle that I’ve been needing to break out of.
These are the only areas left in my healing process that are slightly flaky, dry and bumpy still. I was slightly skeptical at trying out the Remedywear (Tencel + Zinc) line because I felt I still might feel uncomfortable and hot with all of that clothing on, but I was still hopeful.
When I tried on the set, I noticed how cool to the touch it was and how super soft it felt on my skin. Because it’s so lightweight and breathable, I didn’t sweat or feel hot at all! It has definitely prevented me from scratching just because it feels so soft and nice on my skin and I don’t want to scratch my skin because mentally, I know the fabric is helping me restore my skin because of the zinc and antimicrobial properties in it.
I only really wear this set to bed, as it’s too hot where I live (Florida) to wear under clothing, but if I lived in a colder climate and if my skin was flaring badly I would try wearing it out under my clothes. I highly suggest trying out this set if you have a tendency to scratch at night and need some relief in your skin.”
